Brown Thomas Store

Brown Thomas, Ireland’s premier department store, decided to move to larger premises across Grafton Street, which comprised an assembly of eight period houses and several mews warehouses that had all been interconnected over the previous century.

The project comprised the rebuilding of three of the houses, and the total renovation of the remaining structures. The facade to Grafton Street included the retention and conservation of the upper sections, so retaining much of the character and heritage of the street, with new shop fronts at street level. The works were carried out over a 7 month period, with the site working 24 hours a day and six days a week.

The signature image for Brown Thomas had been its black painted timber shop fronts with bright red doors, an image also used on its packaging. It was decided to transfer the red colour across the street, but by using the colour in the awnings over the shop windows.
