Royal Maternity Hospital, Bahrain

The Royal Maternity Hospital, Bahrain, represents a new concept in the delivery of women’s health services in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The brief envisaged a serene and relaxed facility which would offer a patient experience more akin to a high-end leisure resort than a hospital. This high standard of design and finish was still required to achieve compliance with the latest international standards in the design of clinical spaces and maternity services.

Expertise

The resulting design is a response to the demands of the brief, the challenging climate, and the requirement for a landmark building on this highly visible site beside the busy Al Muasker Highway.

The design comprises two gently curved blocks separated by an enclosed internal garden space. The integration of internal and external planting, water features and prominent solar shading enhances the ambience of the hospital and the well being of patients and visitors from their point of arrival at the site through to the landscaped terraces provided with each premium bedroom suite.

Clinical accommodation includes delivery suite, maternal and neo-natal Intensive Care Units, minor surgery unit, nursery and day care. Service areas at basement level are accessed from the rear of the building to achieve complete separation from patient and visitor movements.

The two phase construction programme will ultimately see the provision of 70 beds, including 12 royal premium bedroom suites. Upon completion of our developed designs, site delivery was overseen by AECOM Middle East Ltd and Davis Langdon.
